Crabs can survive on dry land!

The Crab is a tier 3 Ocean animal in Mope.io, and the equivalent of the Mole, Chicken, Penguin and Meerkat.
Technical[]
- Upgrades from the Rabbit, Trout Arctic Hare or Desert Chipmunk at 400 XP.
- Upgrades to the Pig, Woodpecker Sea-horse, Seal or Armadillo at 1K XP.
- The Crab has a 'Hide in Shell' ability, that can can be activated by holding
W, and only works on dry land. When used, the Crab also hides in a shell, causing any inflicted damage from predators to be reduced (the Crab doesn't have a tail and cannot be bitten by prey). This comes at the cost of the Crab's movement speed also reducing. - It can walk on hills, rocks, and can use any size Hiding Hole and whirlpools.
- Crabs can eat animals in between tier 1 and 2, as well as Raspberries, Dates, Cactus Pears, Plankton, Carrots, Berries and Honeycomb.
- Predators of the Crab include any animal within tier 4 to tier 9 (Sea-horse to Pufferfish)
Appearance[]
Crab[]
The Crab has a red body, with a red 'helmet' on top. It has two lines of ridges on its back. Two small pincers are on its front, and there are 6 visible pairs of legs. In-game, it looks as though the crab is constantly moving sideways (this doesn't at all affect gameplay).
While using its Special Ability it gains a new appearance. Most of the Crab is tucked in a cream colored conch, looking similar to the actual Conch. Its pincers are more tucked in.
Gold Trimmed Crab[]
The Gold Trimmed Crab is exactly the same as the normal Crab but the helmet is golden. Without images, it actually walks forwards.
Its shell is golden.
Metallic Crab[]
The Metallic Crab is more of a rust color. It has orange two vent-like openings, one on its back and the other where the eyes would be. Its limbs are darker and more geometrical with gray nails on the joints and body. Each leg has a dull orange point at the end.
The Metallic Crab's limb tuck inwards when using its ability. The vent at its front is darker.
Coconut Crab[]
The Coconut Crab is similar to the Amethyst Crab, a King Crab skin which is purple. Compared to the Crab, the Coconut Crab's red 'helmet' and pincers are a red onion purple, while its body and legs are a lighter version of the helmet color. Its pincers are larger and have a dark 'bubbly' pattern. Instead of ridges on the Coconut Crab's back, it has light-purple 'bubbly' designs like the pincers.
Its "shell" when hiding in it is actually a coconut decorated by a pink flower and punctured by a striped straw, owning up to its name.
Dark Matter Crab[]
The Dark Matter is a purple Animal with a large, mildly spiked bivalve shell spotted toward the extremes. Several large lighter bumps are evident, and a ridge marked by chevrons runs down the center to the head. The shell splits open into a magenta inside with large pink fangs bordering the rim of each shell half. At the center front of the Animal is its small purple head. It has tiny mandibles and a spiked dark bottom jaw. The Dark Matter Crab has two larger(yet small in comparison to the head) pairs of narrowed eyes followed by two smaller ones behind each, all being crimson with lighter pupils. Its spiked limbs are purple, ending in a sharp magenta point with the exception of its front legs which have magenta claws.
When hiding in its shell, the shell halves close toward each other, giving the appearance of clenched pink teeth. Its head tucks in almost entirely, with only the longest chin spikes peeking out. Its legs close together, the bumps on the back are brighter, and the shell has more and longer spines.
Old/Legacy[]
The old Crab is a bright red circle with two eyes. Two circles with a slice out of them act as pincers. The Animal walks sideways. While using its ability it is covered by a tan conch. A little bit of the head and claws stick out when inside the shell.
Strategy[]
- A safe way is to eat plankton, but if you want to level up quickly go to the Desert, as you move pretty fast there, go and farm Cactus Pears. If your water is low, go to a water spot or Healing Stone. If there is no water spot or Healing Stone nearby, go to an oasis.
- Just like with Shrimp and Trout, try looking for Healing Stones and Sharks. You can scavenge the Meat that will be provided from the Shark's bite on prey. However, don't get too risky as the shark can jaws bite you too. Any mentioned method will reliably level you up fast.
- When you are threatened by a predator such as a Squid or Sea-horse, go onto an ocean hill (very common around the ocean) and hide in your shell.
- Flamingoes however, can also climb hills. Since they can't climb rocks, you can evade them by staying on one. Wait there until either predator leaves. However, this will not work with Turtles. If one comes by, quickly dive and look for a whirlpool to hide in. If there are predators all around and the water isn't an option, use your shell ability. The damage done will be decreased and prolong any possibly consumption of you.
- When hunting, try to look for all Tier 1-2 animals in the water, as most are slow in water.
- You are slightly faster than Shrimp (not noticeable) so you can chase them down.
- Trout are slightly harder as they have a boost ability that can outrun you. If you see one though, chase them down! Don't give up unless you are clearly much further away from it.

- The crab is the only animal that has the appearance of moving sideways. However, this does not affect gameplay in any way.
- It is the only ocean-spawning animal along with Turtle, Flamingo, Pelican and King Crab that can survive to a considerable degree on dry land.
- This is the lowest tier animal that can climb hills and rocks, with the next one being the Seal.
- Hiding in shell crab design was changed on March 14, 2017.
- It's one of the only 3 animal that doesn't have a tail, and the highest tier animal not to have one.
